As you’re designing your landscaping, it’s important to create a look that will see you through many seasons. But you can really spice things up by mixing in some annuals with your perennials. For the plants and flowers you’ll be replacing every year, you have a little extra freedom to go with this year’s trends. Here are some to consider as you prepare for planting season.

Sustainable Landscaping

Going green is more popular than ever, and it’s a trend that will likely never die. That means you can gradually redesign your garden with sustainability in mind. The best thing you can do is reduce the need to water your landscaping during the driest months of the year. Inspect your irrigation system regularly to make sure it’s working properly and skip using it when you can. Also, consider collecting rainwater in barrels and using that water to keep your plants and flowers hydrated.

Attract Colorful Insects

Mother Nature can do a great job of bringing color to your outdoor spaces.

Both butterflies and bees will keep your yard colorful. Like bees, butterflies are attracted to nectar, so yellow coneflowers and goldenrod are a good choice.

But when going this route, it’s important to keep in mind that you won’t want bees swarming your front door or backyard lounging areas.

Keep these plants well clear of those areas and you should be fine.

Decorative Edibles

Gardens have become increasingly popular as homeowners look for a way to stay healthy, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint. You’d be surprised how easy it is to grow fruits, vegetables, and even herbs in your own backyard. Here are a few ideas to help you start your garden:

  • Replace perennials with colorful leaves with rhubarb. You’ll have a delicious ingredient for pies, as well as adding a pop of color to your landscape.
  • Instead of accenting the front of your bordered areas with foliage, consider planting some loose-leaf lettuce. Not only is it colorful and plush, but you’ll eventually have enough to make a delicious summer salad.
  • If you’re looking for a semi-evergreen shrub, consider a blueberry bush. These shrubs have just enough color to beautify your favorite outdoor areas, while also making delicious fruit for summer desserts and snacks.
